Realistic Money Saving Advice

by Rachel Ray

In this today’s economy, prices seem to go higher every year, yet wages do not always keep up. Saving money can sometimes be difficult for many people. To help you save money, here are some pointers:

Determine the things that are important to you. Identify the items that you need and the items that you want to have. Priority should always go towards needs first and if anything left over, then the wants, not the other way around.

Be sure to allot your finances to basic needs such as food, shelter, transportation, clothing and the like. Without these items survival is very difficult if not impossible. Sometimes we think things are basics that truly are not, such as cell phones, etc.

Make a list of the things that you want to buy and be sure that the items that you are buying are good enough to sustain your basic needs. Learning to be satisfied with what we already possess that’s good enough is important. We don’t always need the newest and best versions.

To try to avoid unwanted purchases, see if there’s an option to try it before buying to see if it even has the quality and effectiveness you hope for. Keep in mind to spend wisely on items with quality backing them yet keeping within your budget.

You may try to budget your money in advance. You can make a plan first before spending your money. There are instances that you spend your money without even thinking that it is not the right time to have it. It also advisable to buy items at the end of the season, prices at this time of the year are low and cheap.

Do comparison shopping to find the best prices. Do not limit your options to just one store only. You may find the best item that can be useful and affordable to you by window-shopping first rather than buying by impulse. Many stores out there carry the same items and can offer lower prices. Sometimes buying online is cheaper than in a brick and mortar store, but factor in shipping charges when comparing.

You can save more money in your household by conserving electricity. Be sure to turn off appliances that are not in use. You may compare your monthly electric bills regularly to check if you are maintaining your desired bill.

Save on transportation costs by being organized. Take a bus or ride or walk when possible. Arrange errands in close proximity to each other, don’t make a special trip for just one errand. Keep lists to keep track of needed errands upcoming.

Here’s the painful one, habits! Ouch, I feel your pain. Take a look at personal habits, smoking, drinking, lattes, sodas, candy, etc. Take one month and track every penny spent going to these habits. You may find the price exorbitant and expose a very real area of overspending. It may be the time to bite the bullet and either quit or severely modify that habit.

Look at any other area that might be a financial drain that is really not necessary. Perhaps bartering with people you know for services or products could be a feasible option. Get creative, you might be surprised at what you can come up with.
