Frequent heartburn and pains that seem like you are having some cardiac troubles are some of the more prominent Acid Reflux Symptoms that you just could not take for granted. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or GERD could easily lead to other complications and could damage the esophageal lining. Over the counter medications could provide immediate, albeit, temporary relief to your acid reflux symptoms but frequent episodes of discomfort from these should be referred to your doctor.

The most effective way to combat acid reflux symptoms is modifications to one’s lifestyle. “Changing one’s lifestyle” gets to be appreciated more when someone needs to adapt to it.

Change in one’s lifestyle is harder than it sounds. The phrase meansyes, overhauling the way you live. It’s either that or continue suffering acid reflux symptoms. Whatever the case, when your acid reflux symptoms get worse, eventually, your physician will be advising you the same along with the numerous medications and other expensive medical treatments.

Those who are suffering chronic acid reflux symptoms are advised to keep a diary or a log of the food they eat and the reaction they get. Through this food diary, one can monitor the foods that trigger acid reflux symptoms. This could also help one identify the foods they must avoid as they make gradual changes in their diet.

Some of the usual foods that are known to trigger acid reflux symptoms are spicy foods, fatty foods, onions, peppermint, citrus fruits, tomatoes, pepper, and carbonated drinks. Before you say, “No problem, avoiding these foods is no big deal,” check out the next list of foods and drinks you have to avoid to minimize the occurrence of acid reflux symptoms: coffee, alcohol, cigarette, and chocolates (the last item gets the most reaction from women.)

Who would say “No big deal”? When coffee, cigarette and alcohol are almost a part of their lives, that’s got to be really tough for those folks.

It would also be to your benefit if you try to eat your food in smaller portions. One of the causes of acid reflux symptoms are large meals. Besides preventing heartburn, this measure also works as a good slimming diet. It so happens too that losing weight is another preventive measure against acid reflux symptoms.

Another good practice that you have to observe is not going to bed on a full stomach. Meals must be had at least two to three hours before you go to bed or have some afternoon nap. Cigarette smoking is also advised against as this relaxes the muscle which in turn allows acid back to your esophagus.

Don’t forget that acid reflux symptoms are basically stomach acids flowing upwards, back to your esophagus so it is a good measure to wear loose clothings and avoiding belts as these may increase the pressured that is directed towards your abdomen. Elevating the head of your bed at about six to eight inches higher than the foot would also help.
