Use Caution with Herbal Supplements

by Kim Archer

The holistic approach to maintaining health is becoming more and more popular as people seek to avoid the adverse side effects associated with prescription drugs or in an attempt to reduce medical costs. Over the past few years, sales of herbal supplements have increased tenfold. Worryingly, a large number of people believe that because herbal supplements are derived from natural herbs, they need not concern themselves with dosage and use.

Herbal treatments have been widely touted as healthy alternatives to synthetic and expensive pharmaceuticals. However, you must still use them with caution and you must know what you are doing. Make sure you study and know what you’re putting into your body (or on it) before you take an herb you’re not familiar with. It could be dangerous.

Some people hope to avoid going to a doctor and instead treat all of their ailments - from the insignificant to the serious - using herbal remedies. It’s always best to consult your doctor before you begin using herbal treatments whether alone or in conjunction with other medications he or she prescribes.

Many companies sell herbs off the internet without any verifiable way to back up their claims or even a guarantee that you’re receiving the kind of herb you’re investing in. You want to only buy from a reputable company that delivers herbs you can trust.

In addition, you should be concentrating on maintaining health, not simply treating disease or ailments you may acquire. Herbal medicine works best when you want to maintain balance within your body, not just when you want to fix a problem that’s bothering you.

You should find out how much of a particular herb you can safely consume, and also whether it is safe to take a particular herbal supplement if you are on any other medication. There is the possibility that there may be unsafe interactions between herbal and synthetic medications, so you should be very careful in this regard.

While most distributors of herbal supplements include dosage directions on the packaging, some do not. You should be able to find information about the particular herb that you are interested in online, so you should ensure that you order the correct herb and take it in the correct amounts.

Whenever you start taking an herb for the first time, you’ll want to use caution and start with smaller doses until you make sure you’re not going to have an allergic reaction, just as you could with any synthetic medication. Start with a test sample and then if all goes well, increase it to the recommended dose.

Just because a medicinal remedy is “natural” doesn’t mean that it’s safe to use. Keep in mind that a small amount of an herb can be deadly if misused. You should read all labels and instructions for using the herb and if you have any questions, consult your health care professional.
