The mean blood pressure of the people in the study was 173/91 and they were from 195 different hospitals in 13 different countries. In total, 3,845 people participated in the study.

During the four-year study period, there was a drastic drop in mortality rates. This was due to the decline in mean blood pressure from 173/91 to 150/61. The overall death rate declined by 21 percent, while deaths attributed to cardiovascular diseases fell by 23 percent. Thirty percent fewer strokes were recorded, and of the strokes that did occur, the death rate fell by 39 percent. Most significant, however, was the 64 percent reduction in deaths due to heart failure. This was the largest decline in mortality rates noted in the study.
