Liver Detoxification - The Why’s and What’s

by Lee Dobbins

People were not necessarily healthier a century ago, but they were not plagued with the same health problems we have today. The majority of people did not eat, drink and breathe in toxins every day of their lives. It has been the later generations who decided that our foods need extra treatment in order to produce more, last longer, and be safe from insects. The toxins in our food, air and water are inside us, stored in fat cells and blocking the liver. Why? The liver is our cleansing organ and we are overloading it with work. Thousands of people are looking to liver detoxification as a means of becoming healthy.

There is no denying that our livers need protein, but fruits, vegetables and whole grains are the best for cleaning and keeping the liver clear. Vegetarians have been telling us this for several decades. Meat, dairy and preservatives are hazardous to our health.

If the world were wiser about food, everyone would go organic. As it is, organic produce and other food is often much more expensive than the typical grocery store variety. If you think organic foods are beyond your budget, buy the regular kind and be sure to wash it all carefully before consumption.

It is self-defeating to partake of alcohol, drugs or nicotine during a liver detoxification. These are completely off the list of acceptable consumption when you are detoxifying. If you are struggling with addiction or alcoholism, do not detox outside of a medical clinic. Detoxifying from hard drugs can be dangerous and without proper treatment, the result can even be death. Don’t take the risk. Go through treatment before you try this type of detox.

When it comes to tobacco, a good liver detox immediately upon quitting smoking or chewing can really help you by clearing your body of nicotine very quickly. After a good detox, you will find cravings are much milder than quitting without a detox.

The hormones we take in through dairy products and meats have been linked to early reproductive development and cancers. It doesn’t take a scientist to recognize that adding hormones to our bodies is an unhealthy way to live. Even if you decide a liver detoxification plan is not for you, go organic in this area. Eat dairy and meat that is hormone free.

There are a variety of ways to detoxify your liver. You might choose to eat only fruits, vegetables, beans, nuts and whole grains or you can choose to drink specially-formulated beverages throughout your detox. Some people use a combination of the two plans. While the juice or liquid fast works more quickly, it is also more stressful on your system. A combination plan might include substituting two meals with a cleansing drink.

Even if you do choose to use the formulated beverages for your detox plan, go into it gradually by cutting out meats, sugars and dairy and replacing them with fruits and vegetables before going full force into a juice or beverage fast. When you are done with your liquid fast, give your body a chance to get used to eating again. Add foods back to your diet slowly when your liver detoxification is finished. For the sake of your health, do not give up the natural way of eating.
