Pregnancy’s Link to Female Hair Loss

by C. Gray

It is nothing new that women who are pregnant go through many hormonal changes that affect their body. One such change is the condition of their hair. Women will find their hair grows luxurious and thick while others find their hair becomes dull, limp or even begins to thin out. Women who find their hair is growing and is healthier can thank the increase of estrogen. Also a better diet and prenatal vitamins can attribute to the luscious locks.

While these changes can leave a woman feeling anxious and unappealing, it is important to remember that the changes are only temporary. In fact, most women find their hair returning to normal beginning six to twelve weeks postpartum. There is no medical treatment for the hair thinning and hair loss so as long as you are properly eating and taking vitamins, it is just a natural part of being pregnant.

Hair is one of the first indicators of good health. Women who have suffered from severe morning sickness or whose diets have changed and become poor will first see the change in their hair. It is a good warning sign that vitamins in the body are being depleted, especially iron. If a woman notices any alarming changes in her hair during pregnancy, it is important to speak with a doctor. Dry brittle hair caused by lack of iron can also cause hair loss.

Hair can also begin falling out post pregnancy. Don’t be surprised if all that beautiful new growth begins to fall out. This is very normal to experience three to six months after delivery. It may take a couple of hair growth cycles, which can equal a couple of years, for hair to grow back to its normal state, especially if it is typically worn long.

A good way to keep your hair healthy during and post pregnancy is to talk with your doctor to ensure a proper balance of hormones. Also avoid pigtails, ponytails, cornrows, hair weaves, braids and tight rollers. These can cause unneeded stress on the hair follicles and can lead to hair loss. Eating a proper diet of fruits and vegetables will help protect the hair follicle and will encourage hair growth. The proper shampoos and conditioners can also help.

There are hair loss treatments available that are specifically designed for women. Prior to using a hair loss treatment we stress going over the ingredients with your doctor. Doctors’ will be able to advise you on what ingredients you need to avoid. This is even more crucial when it comes to staying healthy while pregnant.
