How often have you judged someone by the style of their hair or said that their hairstyle really doesn’t suit them? The problem with hair loss effects women differently than men. Because of societal norms hair loss in women causes lowered self esteem and confidence.
Generally male or female pattern baldness or hair loss is inherited. If your mom had problems with hair loss you are more likely to have it too. This may be a simplistic answer, but it is statistically proven in research studies.
It is hormone balance that is the key with hair loss as both the male (androgens) and female (estrogen) hormones need to be at the correct levels. This hormonal imbalance can cause significant hair loss.
At any point in a person’s life about 10 percent of the hair on their head is resting (not growing). After a few months, the resting hair falls out and new hair begins to grow in its place. This growing phase can last anywhere from 2 to 6 years. While it may seem frightening at first, this hair loss is quite normal. Hair normally grows at a rate of approximately one centimeter every month but some women lose hair for other reasons.
Our hair actually stops growing for a couple of months or so during a 2 to 6 year cycle and around one tenth of our hair is in this state at any one time. While in the growing phase, hair will gain approximately 1 centimeter a month. It is normal to experience hair loss every day as part of this resting and growing cycle. Some women experience excessive hair loss from a variety of other causes.
The cause of hair loss in women is multi-variable but many people falsely believe that hair loss is caused by things like bad circulation, stress, sweat and dirt on the scalp, or even from wearing hats. The only exception in this list is cases of life threatening stress which some people find it hard to get over. However, in many incidences it is possible to rectify this hair loss situation.
Certain other situations can also cause women’s hair loss like medical treatment using chemotherapy, scalp infections, depression pills, hormone tablets and even diabetics can suffer with the problem. The good news is you will often times regrow your hair once these treatments are discontinued.
