Necessary Equipment For Aspiring Boxing Trainees

by Chris Channing

A beginner to boxing may think that the amount of equipment and training is a lot to take in. In many respects, this is true- but getting the right boxing equipment to improve one’s ability to become a better boxer is just a matter of knowing what to buy and how to train with the equipment.

Safety equipment is just as important as training equipment, if not greater because it helps shield the boxer’s body from harm that can put a boxer out of the boxing season altogether. It is common for boxers to exhibit proficient use in hand guards when sparring, as injury to the knuckles or wrist is quite common when protection isn’t used. Other protective pieces such as a groin guard or a head guard will also prove to be worthy investments.

Out of all the characteristics that a boxer may possess, being able to practice a better hand to eye coordination than his or her opponent can often win a match over brawn any day. This means that practicing with a lightweight type of bag, usually called a speed bag, is important to gain valuable hand eye coordination and to learn the rule of keeping one’s hands up in a match to prevent holes in one’s defense.

One of the easiest ways to get a knockout is to land a perfect body hit. Landing a good body hit will soften up the opponent’s defense enough to land an even more devastating hit to the head. But practicing such things will require the use of a heavy weight bag- which allows the practice of combination moves and body hits. Boxers who are well gifted in training in the heavy weight bag will often have higher knockout rates.

Modern technology has made it possible for the “slam man” punching bag, or what is otherwise called a human shaped bag. This bag is shaped in the form of a human, and is made of synthetic materials that act and react much like a human body would to a punch. This can give the “real feel” when sparring with the bag, meaning training can benefit much more as a result. A slam man may be more expensive on average, but it is well worth the money in learned expertise.

While it might not seem as important, proper clothing is a matter in boxing as well. Boxing clothing should always be flexible enough to allow for quick movements without distracting the boxer. Clothing should also be loose enough to allow for a comfortable fit. To please both necessities, boxers commonly wear boxing shorts in the ring, and accompany the outfit with a boxing hoodie jacket when outside the ring.

Closing Comments

The many types of boxing equipment should all be made use of. Otherwise, there are key aspects in boxing that are being missed out on. It is also important for boxers to keep current on safety trends- and always be sure to wear mouthpieces, groin guards, and other protective gear. In the end, a trainer, local sports store, or online retailer can provide further information on the topic and on proper boxing technique.
