There are some bed & breakfast issues you may have to deal with from time to time that aren’t going to be pleasant. Yet it is a fact that such things will occur in this type of business establishment. Knowing what you are up against and devising a plan for effectively handling them is very important. Not all of your customers are going to be friendly and happy people.
It is also your responsibility to provide a safe environment for all of your guests. You certainly can’t allow the behavior or one individual to affect all of them. People should never feel uneasy at your business due to how other people are behaving. That isn’t what they paid for or why they chose to stay at a bed & breakfast. How you deal with these types of situations is going to affect their decision to return in the future or not.
Most business owners understand that they need to do all they can to accommodate the wishes of their guests. Yet that doesn’t mean that you allow them to engage in reckless behaviors that affect everyone else. Try to give people the benefit of the doubt but should you feel uneasy about a situation then trust yourself to know enough about people to be on alert.
Effective communication skills can help to take care of many of the types of problems that may arise at your bed & breakfast location. However, you may not be able to take care of issues that are developing between them. Should a couple be having issues at your business you can do your best to give them space to discuss it. Should the situation appear violent though you need to get the police involved to investigate it further.
Noise tends to be a problem from time to time at a bed & breakfast. Out of respect for other guests they need to be quiet at night. You may need to provide a couple of warnings but beyond that they are being disruptive. If they continue to engage in the disruptive behavior rather than respecting others you may need to ask them to leave.
You definitely don’t want people using any type of drugs in your establishment. If that appears to be an issue you need to immediately ask them to vacate your property. Think carefully about your policy on alcohol use in the place as well. Some owners allow it but it could lead to behavior problems due to intoxicated individuals. Smoking is another common problem so make sure guests know if it is acceptable or not.
People may be great during the early evening hours and then completely different when they return from a night out on the town. They may be arguing with each other and you may need to get law enforcement to remove one or both parties depending on the vitality of the situation. You may have to deal with individuals returning drunk which is never a fun activity to be supervising.
Asking guests to leave your establishment is often a very last resort. Yet it is a legal right that you have and you should exercise it when you feel the need to do so.
