Why Am I Getting Clicks, But No Purchases?

by Stu McLaren

Sometimes you come across those business questions that just have you stumped or slow down your progress. Personally, this has happened to me, especially when I was just starting my online marketing business. Within this article I’m going to answer one of the questions I had about affiliate marketing, hoping to help you with your business success.

Let’s start with the question:

Through promoting an affiliate products I’ve been able to refer over 25 people through my link. The problem is, I’m not sure if I am doing something wrong because I haven’t made any sales.

Here is the answer:

Conversion rates will vary depending on a few things, such as the way the product is positioned, the copy of the salesletter, what guarantees or bonuses are linked with it.

Knowing the multiple variables that affect conversion rates it is also important to know that it often takes 25 or more clicks of any one product in order to generate sales. The number of sales made will be greatly influenced by the type of traffic being sent there.

For example, if 40 cat lovers clicked through to a dog training website, the likelihood of any sales being made would be next to zero. That’s why my biggest piece of advice for any affiliate would be to focus on the quality of the traffic you are sending.

You want to make sure that the people you are promoting to fit the target market for the product. Then you want to position the product so that it hits the hot buttons of that market.

* What are their biggest challenges? Frustrations?

* What are their desires?

* Think about what your market wants? (ex. free time, more money, more influence etc.)

These are the types of questions that you want to answer because it will get you in the mind of the person you are promoting to. It helps you better position the products you are promoting and as such, the traffic you send will be much more targeted (this is assuming that you are promoting to people that are somewhat targeted for this type of offer).

Finally, it’s important to note that it typically takes at least 100-200 clicks (if not more) to any one product before you can drill deeper to find any significant problem with the actual promotion. This number of clicks will give the proper amount of data that you’ll need in order to make a sound judgment.

To begin though, you always want to start with the target market and make sure you are promoting to people who would be within that market. Next, focus on how you position the product to that targeted audience.
