For those looking to take advantage of the benefits, few businesses can compare with gift baskets.

Gift baskets are now a billion dollar business. Thousands have made a good income from their creativity and drive. Corporate marketing departments often look for things to provide customers on special occasions. Everyone is looking for that unique item that will please a friend or family member.

But what do you need to get started? First, as with all things, a little knowledge is required.

Basically, gift baskets are interestingly packaged containers full of - you guessed it - gifts. Any small items can be used to fill a gift basket - bath accessories, jewelry, stuffed toys, food or wine, to name but a few of the hundreds of things that can be used. Some other matters, however, should be kept in mind before launching a gift basket home-based business.

This business really does rely on your ability to be creative. There are many people who have the creativity needed; however, there are others who find it more difficult to come up with the ideas they need to make this work. Unless you decide to start this home based business with a partner, more than likely you won’t be able to hire someone right away to help, so you’ll have to start out by relying on your own creativity.

However, you will need a lot more than just artistic flair to run a home business that specializes in selling gift baskets. You will need to have some great practical and business skills in order to be successful as well. Great marketing skills are very important and can be a critical factor in whether you succeed or fail at your business. Even if you have the best gift baskets out there, if you don’t get the word out, you won’t be able to make the money you need to make.

Of course you definitely could use some accounting skills, although today there are great software options that are easy for you to use and very inexpensive as well. However, you need to make sure that you discipline yourself to use this software as well. It is important that you track your costs, your inventory, the expenses of the business, and the sales you make as well. While it is a bit more complicated than just taking care of a checkbook, it is not that difficult, but you may want to get some help if you’re having difficulties.

A basic competence with computers is a prerequisite for business in today’s world. You will be doing a lot of advertising and marketing online - even if you are giving out leaflets, or advertising your product by word of mouth in your area or running spots on the radio, you will still need the internet to conduct your business and let people know about your product. Invest some money in getting the right person to upload and maintain an effective website that will boost your sales.

You will also need to spend some time researching the competition as well before you start your own gift basket home based business. You will want to make sure that you come up with reasonable prices for your gift baskets. Even if you offer creative and wonderful gift baskets, you don’t want to price them so high that people don’t purchase them. So, make sure you research pricing and come up with competitive prices that will make your gift baskets sell.
